Zhanna Tsytsyn was born in Krasnoyarsk and grew up between her father's Russian homeland and her mother's Kobuleti, on the Georgian coast.

She came to the United States at nine. She studied at the Art Institute of Portland and earned a BA in painting, drawing and printmaking at Portland State University. She paints in oil with raw pigment and collected earth, and builds clay masks crowned with driftwood, thorns and fringe, drawn from animism and Siberian tradition.

In 2024 Saatchi Art named her one of its Rising Stars, the annual list of emerging artists to collect. In April 2026 One Grand Gallery opened Where Roots Refuse Borders: fourteen masks, six paintings and a large sculpture at the centre of the room. Oregon ArtsWatch gave the show a full review, and in July the gallery took it to the Seattle Art Fair.

She lives in Camas, on the Washington side of the Columbia.
