“I'm interested in using art as a motive to start a conversation, and to encourage people to get into the forest: to see what is at stake.”

She co-founded the photo agency Photographer.ru, and in 2001 founded the Objective Reality Foundation to back long-form documentary photography and multimedia. She has curated more than twenty exhibitions, the PhotoQuai biennale in Paris among them, and sat on World Press Photo juries twice.

When Russia's foreign-agent law arrived she closed the foundation and moved to New York, where she co-founded the production company Screen. In 2018 she came to Portland, drawn by forests that reminded her of the Siberia she photographed in the early 2000s. The forest became her new work: After Us, a series on the old-growth forests of Oregon and Washington, from the drained bed of Detroit Lake to the Riverside fire scar on Mt.

Hood, made with grants from the Ford Family Foundation and RACC. She is now assembling Roots, a curatorial project on the memory of forests with artists from more than ten countries.
