He graduated from the State Conservatory and was assistant conductor of the Slovak Philharmonic while earning a Ph.D. in conducting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava.
He came to the US as a Fulbright scholar in 2003, earned a second doctorate at the University of Arizona in 2008, and studied further at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena and the Wiener Meisterkurse in Vienna. He has led the Rogue Valley Symphony since 2010, and its budget has quadrupled under him. For its 50th anniversary the orchestra commissioned five new works, more than all of Oregon's other orchestras combined that season.
He was music director of the Queens Symphony Orchestra in New York from 2016 to 2025, and in 2025 took over the Oregon Coast Music Festival. This is the orchestra's 60th season and his 17th, with Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich in Ashland, Medford and Grants Pass.
