Shostakovich wrote his Fifth Symphony in 1937, and the organizers call it the statement of a man standing his ground under harsh censorship. At the Leningrad premiere, by available accounts, the ovation lasted more than half an hour. The MYS orchestra, conducted by Raúl Gómez-Rojas, pairs it with Bernstein’s Candide Overture. The program also includes the world premiere of a piece by Sky Neal, written as part of a young composers program.
