A young man in 1980s New York searches for his Master, surrounded by street fashion, kung fu and Motown music. Michael Schultz’s The Last Dragon grew out of the kung fu craze and the blaxploitation era, genre cinema with Black heroes. The music, the costumes and the strange world Berry Gordy built made the film a cult favorite from the start. It was chosen for the screening by Portland photographer Terrell Brown, for whom it was his father’s favorite film.
