Words at War: Ukrainian Poet Yaryna Chornohuz
November 7, 4:00 PM
Yaryna Chornohuz writes about war from the inside: she has served in Ukraine’s armed forces since 2019, as a fighter and medic in a Marine reconnaissance battalion, and in her poems fallen comrades stand alongside her daughter and everything worth fighting for. Her poetry earned her the Shevchenko Prize, Ukraine’s highest literary award. At WorldOregon, together with the Portland-Lviv Sister City Association, she talks about how the ordinary and the unimaginable meet in war. The conversation falls during the Portland Book Festival and pairs easily with book week downtown.
