Moscow

Asya Gulua was born in Moscow and started piano at six.

  • Gnessin School from age seven
  • Juilliard, Jerome Lowenthal's studio
  • DMA, University of Oregon
  • Arsen Gulua premieres at Lincoln Center
  • Glass and Bach at Makrokosmos

A year later she was admitted to the Gnessin School of Music, where she studied with Anna Arzamanova and Sergei Lebedev. She moved to the United States in 1996 and finished high school at Interlochen Arts Academy. She went on to Juilliard, in Jerome Lowenthal's studio, a master's with Edward Auer at Indiana's Jacobs School of Music, and a doctorate from the University of Oregon.

She plays duo piano with her husband, the Kharkiv-born pianist and composer Arsen Gulua, and gave the premieres of his works at Lincoln Center. An Oregon ArtsWatch critic named her one of Portland's five stellar pianists. In summer 2025 she played Philip Glass etudes and Bach fugues in the Makrokosmos marathon.

She lives in Salem, teaches, and works with musicians and composers across Oregon.
