Elena Markova is a hereditary artist from Kargopol, a town in Russia’s North known for carved churches and folk painting. She graduated from the Abramtsevo Art College in 1987 and has painted in acrylic in one recognisable style ever since: landscapes with angels, lovers and enchanted gardens, between impressionism and northern folklore. She has shown at the Akhmatova Museum in St. Petersburg (2009, 2011); in Portland she ran her own MarkovCo Gallery in the Pearl District for three years (2016–2019), and DragonFire Gallery in Cannon Beach has represented her since 2014. Her studio in Southeast Portland opens to visitors for Portland Open Studios. With her son Trifon, also a painter, she showed “Mother & Son” at Trinity Cathedral (2022) and Guardino Gallery (2025).
Painting, in a studio shared with her son; open during Portland Open Studios.
