Two years later his father, a Korean translator, was shot, and his mother was sent to the camps. He began writing songs as a student at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute, then taught school in Kamchatka and Moscow. In 1968 his part in the human rights movement forced him out of a Moscow State University boarding school, and the KGB told him to stop giving concerts.

Until 1985 he was credited under the pseudonym Yu. Mikhailov, which is the name on his songs for Bumbarash, An Ordinary Miracle and The Twelve Chairs. He has written some five hundred songs, around thirty plays and the Russian libretto of Notre-Dame de Paris.

He has lived in Israel since 1998. On November 20, 2026, a month before his 90th birthday, he takes the stage of the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue in Kimopanorama.
