The listing says: Bernstein’s Serenade, with the Israeli violinist Vadim Gluzman. It doesn’t say that Gluzman was born in Ukraine in 1973 and grew up in Riga, the son of a conductor and clarinetist and a musicologist. He studied with Roman Šnē in Latvia and with Zakhar Bron before his family moved to Israel in 1990, where Isaac Stern took him under his wing. Today he plays the 1690 “ex-Leopold Auer” Stradivari: Auer taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory for half a century, trained Heifetz and Milstein, and received the dedication of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. On a night built around Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony, Auer’s violin is on the Schnitzer stage.
