Choreographer Gustavo Ramírez Sansano created this work in 2012 as a play on words between Bizet’s opera and the art of bullfighting. The set design and minimalist black-and-white costumes refer to the work of Pablo Picasso, including images reminiscent of Guernica. Ballet Hispanico is a leading American company founded by Tina Ramirez to explore the Latino experience. The production marks the 150th anniversary of the original opera Carmen.
